Malayattoor

More famous for the mount where St. Thomas the Apostle first set foot to sow the seeds of Christianity, today this mount and the church that stands atop it is an international pilgrim centre. Known as the St Thomas mount or the ‘Malayattoor Mala’ in local dialect, it is located 52 kms from Kochi. This holy shrine attracts devotees from all over India. The church has a life-size statue of St. Thomas and the imprint of the feet of the Apostle on a rock. The church is built on the Greco-Roman style of architecture and has many interesting paintings inside it, depicting scenes from the Bible. Malayattoor is a village situated in the verdant hill range of the Western Ghats. The literal meaning of ‘Malayattoor’ means the culmination of mountain, river and land.
